"Hold"

This series grew out of my ongoing interest in the objects we choose to live with and their importance to and impact on our identities. In one of the art workshops with homeless women, I asked them to consider an object that was important to them and to write a few sentences about it. In layering my drawings over their handwriting, I view these pieces as collaborations. A small piece of each woman is seen and given voice through her handwriting. Conversely, each woman’s identity is obscured through the use of blind contour drawing, created in an intimate moment of focus and presence.

The marks in these drawings represent each woman’s journey. Symbols are taken from maps and borrowed from repeated imagery used by each woman in her own artwork. While it is possible to read the text, I have obscured it with several layers of drafting film and drawing. The viewer needs to work a little harder, spend a little more time with the piece in order to read the text. This maintains the intimacy and spirit of the women’s handwriting and thoughts.
