Explorations

While my work usually focuses on the world around me, in this body of work, Explorations, I turn the lens onto myself and perform a sort of self-ethnography. Each piece is a meditation on how a certain routine or ritual in my life connects me at once outward to the world and inward to my being. It is the things that we do everyday, both big and small, that make who we are.

There is an essential discomfort at the core of being an artist. Over the past year, I embraced this discomfort and brought it to the forefront through my choice of processes. With each piece, I challenged myself to either explore a new technique or material, or to push the boundary of my skills in some way. The unknown is uncomfortable and unsettling. As I developed each piece, it was critical that the chosen process and specific materials used, not only complemented, but also strengthened, both the visual and conceptual understanding of the work.
