While most academic food studies focus on the “Other” with “Paper of Plastic?” I continued my research into American food culture. Our supermarkets are filled with packages vying for our attention with good design, brand promises, and health claims. For example, if the package is green, we believe the “food” inside is good for us. Indeed, for one out of every four packaged foods, the container is more expensive than what is inside. Responding to these issues, I produced a series of about 200 line drawings of different types of food packaging found in our supermarkets. “Paper or Plastic?” widens the exploration I began in “best if used by…”
