“Burdens” is a series of 8 concrete bag sculptures. While working with the women, I was struck not only by the importance of their material belongings but also by the burden these become. There is a heaviness and hardness to every aspect of these women’s lives. Their days have a constant circular motion, of walking and waiting, just to be repeated again the next day. The concrete bags visualize the literal heaviness of their belongings on their bodies, as well as symbolize the weight imposed by this way of life on their minds and health.

Creating the series of 8 sculptures in “Burdens,” required great physical endurance. Working with concrete is unforgiving on the body and fatigue quickly sets in. The labor involved in the process is central to the work as it fortifies the connection between my physical making of the pieces and the women that inspired them.
